Atrial Septal Defects (ASD)

Atrial Septal Defects

Atrial Septal Defects (ASDs) are a type of congenital heart disease that affects the structure of the heart. The condition occurs when there is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers of the heart (atria). This hole allows oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor blood, which can strain the heart and lungs over time.

ASDs are one of the most common congenital heart defects, affecting approximately 1 in every 1,500 babies born in the United States. The condition is more common in females than males and can occur alone or in combination with other heart defects.

Symptoms of ASDs can vary depending on the size of the hole and the age of the individual. Small holes may not cause any symptoms and can go undiagnosed until adulthood. However, larger holes can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and heart palpitations. Over time, ASDs can lead to complications such as pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and stroke.

The diagnosis of ASDs is typically made during childhood through a physical examination, imaging tests such as an Echo-cardiogram or Electrocardiogram, or a cardiac catheterization. Treatment options for ASDs depend on the size and location of the hole, as well as the age and health of the individual.
Small ASDs may not require treatment and can close on their own over time. However, larger ASDs typically require intervention to prevent complications. Treatment options include medications to manage symptoms, minimally invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterization to close the hole, or open-heart surgery to repair the defect.
